The walls of the vagina are composed of connective tissue, which plays a vital role in the structural support of the surrounding pelvic organs, including the rectum and bladder. Loss of integrity of the pelvic floor musculature due to childbirth or advancing age may result in symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction.
